Liverpool MP Luciana Berger has called for a code of conduct to stamp out racism during elections.
Speaking at a meeting organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Group Against Antisemitism at Liverpool’s King David Primary School on Sunday, the Wavertree MP said: “I am particularly concerned about the behaviour of candidates and third parties. I want to see a strong, transparent code of conduct adopted across the board.”
The meeting also heard from neighbouring Riverside MP Louise Ellman, who sits on the All-Party Group alongside Ms Berger. They raised concerns last April when election campaign leaflets attacking both women for supporting Israel were pushed through letterboxes mixed up with Liberal Democrat campaign material. It sparked an angry denial from the LibDem candidate that he was connected to the Palestine leaflets.
Louise Ellman told the audience of 100, including many members of Christian groups, that concern was mounting over human rights issues inaccurately equated with the Shoah.
Local Jewish representative council president Gordon Globe said it was important to “bring home to people that there appears to be an increase in antisemitism. Jewish communities, even where small, need to take action.”
